Nilan Johnson Lewis, 3M and UnitedHealth Group Share Social Media Tips for Outside Counsel
With more than 650 social media cases between 2010 and 2012, understanding how social media impacts and influences corporate practices and identity is key. In October, Nilan Johnson Lewis (NJL) hosted a continuing legal education (CLE) session titled, “Social Media Strategies: Best Business and Litigation Practices.” Bringing together legal representatives from NJL, 3M and UnitedHealth Group, the panel offered varying perspectives on social media issues. Hot topics ranged from employment policies, hiring, and employee use, to investigating opposing parties and jurors, and developing strong discovery and trial strategies.
Key insights included:
- “We don’t have a choice on whether we do social media. The question is how well we do it.” – Christy Mennen, shareholder at NJL
- “You can get fired for the things you post on Facebook. It’s true.” – Paul Yechout, general counsel in employment law at UnitedHealth Group
