NJL Adds More Healthcare Expertise with Mike Espenson

Minnesota-based national law firm Nilan Johnson Lewis (NJL) welcomes Mike Espenson who will be practicing in the Health Care and Corporate & Transactional Services practice groups. Mike will add to the team’s deep bench in the health care regulatory space, representing managed care entities in the areas of regulatory compliance, regulatory complaints and investigations, health plan benefits structuring, participation agreements, and member complaints and issues. Adept at identifying and solving issues before they escalate, Mike also has experience developing strategic solutions to complex health law issues, including the CARES Act, the Affordable Care Act, Stark, Anti-Kickback, and HIPAA.

Most recently, he comes to NJL from UnitedHealthcare where he served as Senior Associate General Counsel and led the team responsible for providing legal support to the department responsible for fraud, waste and abuse detection, recovery of overpayments, development of new payment policies, and implementation of COVID testing and vaccine reimbursement processes.

Mike earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2006. He also has a B.A. in Finance and Economics, magna cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas.
