Nilan Johnson Lewis Named Leadership Award Winner by Minnesota Women Lawyers for Third Time
MINNEAPOLIS (April 7, 2016) – Nilan Johnson Lewis is pleased to announce that it has been named the 2016 Leadership Award recipient by Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL), in recognition of the firm’s efforts to enhance the status, influence, and effectiveness of its female attorneys. The firm will officially receive this honor at MWL’s Annual Meeting on April 15, 2016.
This marks the third time that Nilan Johnson Lewis has received the Leadership Award, the most times of any legal employer in the award’s 23-year history. The firm was bestowed this honor previously in 2001 and 2010.
“The award is validation of our continuous commitment to promoting gender and other kinds of diversity to support each of our attorney’s unique contributions to the firm and to our clients,” said Stephen Warch, president of Nilan Johnson Lewis. “We take a lot of pride in this recognition, as diversity is one of the core values that have guided our firm’s direction over the past 20 years.”
At the time of the firm’s award submission, 43 percent of its attorneys and 39 percent of its shareholders were female. In addition, women comprise 60 percent of its board of directors, and three of the firm’s five practice groups are chaired by women. By comparison, the national average for female lawyers in law firms is 33.5 percent (Law360 2015 Glass Ceiling Report), and less than 20 percent of any corporate board positions are held by women (2015 Fortune 1000 index).
In 2015, the firm was recognized nationally in Law360 as one of the top law firms for female attorneys and female partners, placing 16th on its “Glass Ceiling Report” of the top 100 firms for female attorneys and sixth on its “Ceiling Smashers Report” of the top 25 law firms for female partners.
